Permanent A&E Staff Grade Doctor Required – Channel Islands
We are currently looking for a Staff Grade Doctor in A&E for a permanent position in the Channel Islands. This staff grade A&E position is based in a modern hospital that is constantly improving its facilities and is situated in beautiful surroundings.

Duties of the A&E Staff Grade Post
Clinical duties
The postholder will ensure the provision of high quality emergency care within the Emergency Department. The postholder will be expected to be competent in the management of the normal range of emergency medical conditions and injuries, and will be expected to supervise junior trainees. On occasion, middle grade doctors are asked to assist at follow up clinics within the ED.
The postholder will be expected to take operational responsibility for the department as required and in particular, when the senior doctor present, providing a role model to the junior medical staff and nurses.
On designated days the postholder will be responsible for checking and acting on X-ray and pathology results, and for validating discharge letters.
Rota
The rota is subject to some flexibility at times when colleagues are on leave. The postholder may be required to provide some weekend cover for colleagues on annual leave for which remuneration will be provided.
Teaching
Along with senior colleagues the postholder will provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff working in the department. The postholder will be responsible for organising and will be expected to teach on, the hospital Foundation Year 2 programme. The postholder will be expected to teach members of the nursing staff when requested.
Clinical governance and departmental development
Along with the Consultants the postholder will be expected to take a leading role in the delivery of the clinical governance agenda. Specifically the postholder will liaise with senior doctors and members of other departments in the development of multidisciplinary, evidence based guidelines, protocols and care pathways
Other managerial responsibilities
The postholder may need to assist in organising the rota for Associate Specialist/Staff Grades, Junior Doctors (GP Registration/FY2) Senior House officers, in the department as well as their annual and study leave.
The postholder will be an active member of the Emergency Department Management Team, attending regular meetings.
Leave
Annual Leave
Staff Grade doctors who have completed two years’ service in the grade, or who had an entitlement to 30 days (six weeks’ leave) in their immediately previous appointment are entitled to 30 days per annum. For those who do not fill these criteria, the entitlement is 25 days (five weeks’ leave), increasing to 30 days after two years.
Study Leave
The study leave entitlement is 30 days in any period of three years.
Salary
The post is based on 10 basic sessions per week, each session being four hours. Extra sessions are paid for out of hours work and are non-permanent, non-pensionable and may be reviewed subject to the needs of the service.
Facilities and Support Services
There is a 5 bedded surgical intensive care unit which is also used as a high dependency unit, managed on a day to day basis by the Anaesthetic Department, led by 2 Consultant Anaesthetists with a specialist interest in Intensive Care Medicine.
There is a 5 bedded medical intensive care unit/ high dependency unit.
Within the hospital there is a cardiac arrest team covering the hospital 24 hours a day. The hospital trauma team is lead by the Emergency Department.
Future development, acute medicine, and the Sustainable Hospital
The provision of a sustainable acute medicine service and the Hospital at Night is currently under review. This includes the development of an assessment unit, incorporating an ED managed, clinical decision unit. A potential role for ED senior/ middle grade doctors to supplement a Resident Medical Officer rota is being considered. This would depend on the experience of the postholder. In addition, an ED doctor with substantial general internal medicine experience may be offered the opportunity to rotate into the medicine service. This represents an exciting opportunity for a doctor considering a career in either Emergency or Acute Medicine.
MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE
The Emergency Department is within the Directorate of Medicine. One of the Consultant Physicians has been appointed as Clinical Director of Medicine.
POST GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION
Education Centre
This is a shared facility for the Health and Social Services Department. The Centre is furnished and equipped to a very high standard. The medical library is well stocked with books, journals and computer facilities, including internet access. The Centre has numerous excellent teaching rooms and a 90 seat lecture theatre.
There is a full time administrator and two Associate Directors of medical education. The Post-Graduate Educational Committee meets on a regular basis.
Teaching
The hospital has been a recognised ATLS centre since 1990, ALS centre since 1995 and APLS since 2000. There are 2 courses of each held annually. One of the ATLS courses is held in conjunction with an ATNC course. Jersey is a recognised centre for the Major Incident Medical Management and Support (MIMMS) course. One MIMMS course is held annually.
The postholder will be expected to coordinate the hospital F2 and ED junior trainee teaching programme. In addition, there is an active senior medical staff teaching programme involving both internal and external speakers.
There is protected teaching for junior trainees on a Wednesday lunchtime and Staff Grades/Associate specialists on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon.
Continuing Medical Education (CME)
The postholder will be expected to maintain professional development by continuing medical education (CME), including attendances at relevant courses and conferences. There is an active program of audit within the ED focused on the College of Emergency Medicine Clinical Standards. At present there are 6 dedicated hospital study/audit days each year.
